NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 control RA-10 requires organizations to "establish and maintain a cyber threat hunting capability" that operates at an organization-defined frequency. The compliance requirement
NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 RA-10 requires organizations to:
- Establish and maintain a cyber threat hunting capability.

The CISO's problem
The VP of Security Operations at a major regional health system had a budget approved for three threat hunting headcount. He could not find them.

Why traditional approaches fall short

Option 1: Hire dedicated threat hunters

The investigation revealed a multi-wave phishing campaign actively targeting the customer's environment. The attacker had compromised a legitimate domain and properly configured SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication, allowing their emails to bypass traditional security controls and land directly in user inboxes.
Without proactive threat hunting, this campaign would have continued undetected. The initial alert was one email. The hunt found dozens more.
